NORTH YORKSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS 08

NORTH YORKSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS 08

Directions to our house are something like – “… 10 miles into the hills – 2 miles from the ‘B’ road, …eventually the tarmac runs out and a few hundred yards along a rubble road, there you will find us … surrounded by sheep with their lambs and many many rabbits!! In fact I call it Bunny Villas!”

Considering the accessibility for some unsteady, on foot or in a wheelchair, I imagined my studio at home could be quite inaccessible for some so decided to set up locally in the Band Room here in Low Mill. Still Farndale, but well situated a few miles on good roads from Kirkbymoorside or from the top moor road, and including good parking facilities as well as public loos/disabled loo.

Apart from these practical features, it is set at the beginning of the infamous Farndale daffodil walk, which is a picturesque amble along the river – carpeted with a host of golden daffodils earlier in the year, which were purportedly planted by monks many moons ago, and the little hamlet of Low Mill is traditional and unspoilt.

The Band Room is famous in its own right advertised as “the smallest music venue in the world” and can be found on the web at www. Many bands – some famous, come from far & wide to play here in the intimate & quaint atmosphere of this tin shed in the middle of nowhere! It’s cosy reputation has spread so much that bands no longer need to be asked to play – rather they ask if they can play here themselves!

So – I borrowed boards and projector/dvd player from The Gallery at Ryedale Folk Museum and set up my studio (suppose it is more like a mini gallery than a studio).

I have 20 stretched canvases, digitally printed and stretched around wooden box frames. I find these a refreshing change from mounted & framed prints with glass & board. These are much lighter to transport & hang and no worries of glass breaking in transport. The ink is said to last something like 75 years without fading so that is a great bonus too!

Today is the 4th day and I have had a few people through and had some interesting conversations and made some good connections. But it could be much busier! I am a bit tucked out of the way here. The others have told me that over the last 3 years of Open Studios they have built up a mailing list of people who previously bought their work, and other interested parties. This is a new beginning for me and this digital art & video work – so I guess it will take time.

As a way of advertising the local artists we were offered to put our work in to 2 other exhibitions; one at the Pannett Art Gallery in Whitby and the other at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. I have sold a piece from each exhibition so I am thrilled about that!

Last night was the first showing of the 4 Elements video on The Big Screen Hull.
